Gran Canaria Wind & Waves Festival

Gran Canaria's east coast gets so blowy in July that the whole windsurfing world gathers at Pozo Izquierdo for the World Windsurfing Cup. 

While Spain is expected to swelter in 40ºC heat over the weekend, Gran Canaria and the Canary Islands will be no hotter than normal for the time of year.

Gran Canaria is to host the Spanish edition of the famous Porretta Soul Festival at an as-yet-unknown beach on the island, according to local producer Dania Dévora.

Mogán Blue Flags Now Flying

The Mogán Municipality now has its Blue Flags in place at Amadores, Playa de Mogán and Puerto de Mogán marina. They were run up the flagpole by local footballer Aythami Artiles, signed to newly promoted football team UD Las Palmas.

Gran Canaria erupted with joy last night as Las Palmas' football team won promotion to the Spanish Primera Liga for the first time since 2002.

Big Waves Forecast For Gran Canaria

The Spanish Weather Service has placed south Gran Canaria on alert, for today Thursday 21 and tomorrow Friday 22, for large waves of up to 2.5 metres and strong gusts of wind. 

The first of several leaks on the wreck of the Oleg Naydenov has now been sealed with a steel cofferdam, according to the Spanish authorities. Efforts to seal the remaining fuel leaks are ongoing.

Gofio is now officially good for you: A University study confirms what all Canarians already knew.

Gran Canaria's beaches are currently clear of fuel oil after a large volunteer-led clear up over the past two days. There is currently one confirmed oil slick 5 kilometres from the coast but no reports of fresh oil close to the island. 

The 38th annual Guía cheese festival is next Sunday (April 26) in Santa María de Guía old town in north-west Gran Canaria, but the 3rd annual Valasequillo strawberry festival is on the same day. What's a Gran Canaria foodie to do?

The Islas Canarias Rally this weekend means that stretches of road all over the island will be closed on Friday evening and all of Saturday. 

On Friday, the night stages start in Teror. It then moves on to San Mateo and Telde. Expect road closures and disruption from about 19.30 until midnight all along the route. 

On Saturday morning, the rally starts in Teror at 08.00 and repeats the same route to Telde. Expect road closures from 06.00 in Teror and until about 11.00 in Telde. 

On Saturday afternoon, the action moves to the roads connecting Santa Lucia, Tejeda and Valleseco. The roads will be closed from 11.30 to 20.30.

The prize ceremony is at Santa Catalina Square at 21.30 on Saturday so expect a fair bit of traffic in the port.

We advise all non-petrolheads to head to the beach rather than the mountains on Saturday.
