The Casa Mirador de Bandama tourist information point at the top of the Bandama volcano hides a secret bunker from Spain's military past.

The bunker, hidden under an elegant neoclassical house, was so secret that nobody knew that it existed until refurbishment work started. It's now believed that the house, built in 1942 and sealed up since 1999, was as an elaborate disguise for the lookout bunker. At the time the Spanish military expoected the allies to invade the Canary Islands and use them as a base for attacking the Axis powers in North Africa and the Mediterranean.

The bunker, now open to the public along with the house, is 15 square metres and reached by a metre wide, L-shaped tunnel.

Refurbishment work on the house and bunker cost 100,000 euros and the tourist information point it houses, along with the viewpoint, gets 200,000 tourist visits per year.
