Tip Of The Day: Hike The Bandama Caldera, Then Stop For Wine

Hoyos de Bandama winery Hoyos de Bandama winery www.photosgrancanaria.com

The Hoyos de Bandama winery is the only winery in the Monte area of northeast Gran Canaria that is open to walk-ins, but you do need to book in advance for a full winery tour and tasting session.

Located right by the gate to the paths around the Bandama caldera rim and down to its floor, it's a modern winery that has a 300-year history. If you drop in, you can try their award-winning wines by the glass and buy them by the bottle and the case.

The tasting area is set in a cooling patio with a water feature, old wine press and barrels for tables; Perfect after a strenuous walk on the soft Bandama picon.

Technically, the Hoyos de Bandama wines are not Gran Canaria wines as they do import some juice some Tenerife. This is perfectly acceptable under the Islas Canaria DO regulations and the wines are some of the best you can try in Gran Canaria.

The Caldera dry white is two euros per glass and 10 euros a bottle at the winery. Read our review of it here.

Contact Hoyos de Bandama via their website or call the number listed on the page.

Las Canteras beach is a no-take reserve so there are loads of fish, especially where Luis Morote street meets the sand.
