We recently went out with Segway LPA to see exactly what it's like to tour Las Palmas on a Segway.
The first thing that we found out is that Segways are really easy to use; It takes two minutes to learn to use them, you can't really fall off, and they are a quiet but zippy way of getting around.
The second thing is that it's great to move around the city quickly without getting stuck in traffic or break into a sweat; After a couple of hours of zipping around Las Palmas on our Segways we started to wonder why everyone in the city hasn't got one.
The third thing is how much fun it is to tour Las Palmas in a small group with a local guide.
The city's authorised Segway tour company, with brand new Segways and all the equipment you need. They also have a great area in the office with free Wifi where you can catch up on emails and send photos to the family at home.
SegwayLPA offer tours of several areas of Las Palmas, including the beachfront and Santa Catalina Square, the old town of Vegueta, and the Avenida Maritima boulevard that runs the length of the city down to the pretty fishing village of San Cristobal. We did the beachfront and Santa Catalina route.
We did the La Puntilla tour of the Las Canteras beachfront and headed north along the pretty coastal promenade that most people don't even know exists. Then we headed along the Segway pathway to Santa Catalina for a look at the city's biggest square. All in all, we were impressed with the convenience of Segway travel and loved the experience of a guided tour with a local expert. We're going to repeat the experience in Vegueta one day soon because we can't think of a better way of seeing its cobbled lanes that on a Segway.
If you want to see the highlights of Las Palmas in a fun and original way, then a Segway tour is definitely an excellent option.
