The Poem of the Sea aquarium in Las Palmas The Poem of the Sea aquarium in Las Palmas

The Poem of the Sea building site by the port in Las Palmas is a hive of activity and the foundations are almost finished. The first walls start to go up in ten days and the vast main observation window is under construction.

Loro Park vice president Cristoph Kiessling said that work was going well and that he was impressed with local digging skills; the foundations are up to 12 metres deep in an area that is just above sea level. Depth is a key part of the design as the floor of the main display tank will be well below the observation area. This will create a strong sensation of depth.

The key element of the aquarium is the vast glass front of the main display tank. This 140-ton, 18 metres by seven metres piece, the second largest in the world, is currently being made in Italy. It will be transported to Gran Canaria in two bits.
