Gran Canaria's Siam Park will be up-and-running in just two and a half years, with work to begin before the end of 2015.

The dates were announced by Grupo Kiessling representative José Carlos Francisco after a meeting with the Gran Canaria government (Cabildo).

The new president of Gran Canaria, Antonio Morales, who was present at the meeting, stated that his government was "a strong supporter of the project" and that the meeting had "seen progress. We have cleared up the most important problems".

There have been three sticking points that have delayed the start of work on Siam Park Gran Canaria after Grupo Kiessling bought the plot of land at El Veril (just next to Playa del Inglés resort) in 2014.

The first was that the site for the waterpark is in a barranco that is publically owned and could therefore not be modified. However, this snag seems to have been overcome as the Consejo Insular de Aguas is about to give Grupo Kiessling the permits needed to rechannel the watercourse.

The second was that the train track that is planned between Las Palmas and the resorts passed through the site. This is also about to be changed by the relevant Gran Canaria government authorities.

The third snag was a delay in the changes to urban planning needed to give the final go ahead. The changes are expected to be completed and signed in October by the Canary Islands government, according to Grupo Kiessling's Francisco.

Until all the paperwork is stamped and signed, further delays are possible. However, given the speed at which the Grupo Kiessling aquarium is going up in Las Palmas, we wouldn't bet against their timeframe.

Maybe it's time to start queueing.
