Gran Canaria Shopping: Where To Shop At Meloneras

The Meloneras waterfront is one of Gran Canaria's smartest areas with a beautiful fringe of coconut-palms, a wide boulevard with exceptional sunset views, and many of the island's most attractive terraces and outdoor restaurants. It's also home to some of the best shops in Gran Canaria.

The shops at Meloneras are based in the Boulevard El Faro arcade just behind the terraces at the Faro de Maspalomas lighthouse end of the boulevard and along the seafront. You'll also find plenty of shops in the Varadero Mall.

Stores and fashion brand stores along the Boulevard El Faro are a cut above those in most local malls and shopping areas. For example, there's a Polo Ralph Lauren store, along with Lacoste, Nest, Hugo Boss, Armani Collezioni, a huge Fundgrube stocked with a wide range of quality brands, and a Saphir jewellers.

Further west along the waterfront you come to the big, bright Varadero mall with dozens of shops and cafes on two floors. It has something for everyone, including a Fundgrube and a range of local and international fashion brands and stores.

Right at the far west end of the waterfront path, past the big hotels, you get to Meloneras beach and the Playa Meloneras shopping centre. This has a row of beachfront restaurants and lovely bars on the upper floors with superb ocean views but not much in the way of shopping.  It's a great place for a sunset drink or a peaceful meal right by the beach.

The other leisure zone at Meloneras is the Oasis Beach shopping centre inland of the big Meloneras hotels. It has a few shops such as a Mango but is mainly a place for a drink or a snack.

Tip Of The Day: Avoid Bank Card Charges By Paying In Euros

Save money and avoid rip-off bank charges while in Gran Canaria by paying in euros when using your credit or debit card.

Many bars and restaurants in Gran Canaria, and in almost all European holiday destinations, give you the option of paying in euros or in your home currency. Opting for your own currency, while it may seem like the safer option, can add as much as 5% to the bill as it triggers dynamic currency conversion.

DCC basically means that the exchange rate is calculated at point of sale rather than by your bank. It allows you to see the total cost of the transaction in your own currency but adds up to 5% to the total because it uses a terrible exchange rate.

Since the extra money is shared between your bank and the merchant, some places will automatically bill you in your own currency and hope you don't notice. You have the legal right to refuse and void the transaction should this happen.

    ATMs too

The same applies when taking money out of ATM machines in Gran Canaria (and anywhere in Europe); Always choose the local currency option to avoid losing money to poor exchange rates.

If you opt for the local currency option, using bank ATMs is often the cheapest and safest way of getting euros in Gran Canaria. It's far safer than having a big pile of euros hidden in your room or tucked into your shorts.
