Winter calimas bring the same dusty conditions to Gran Canaria as their summer cousins, but they are much cooler. In fact, the southern winds associated with calimas can make it too cool to be on Gran Canaria's big beaches at Playa del Inglés and Maspalomas.
It probably not a beach day today as there will be a fair bit of high cloud in the sky. In fact, if you want to lie on the sand this weekend, it's best to head around to the smaller sheltered beaches such as Mogán, Puerto Rico and Amadores. Or trot up to Las Canteras beach in Las Palmas which is sheltered from south winds. At least you can go shopping in Las Palmas if the sun doesn't come out!
The Trade Winds come back tomorrow and will push the dust away from the island. This should happen overnight so expect a sunny, blue weekend in south Gran Canaria.
The highlands will be a mix of sunshine and cloud so take sunscreen and layers if you're going up top. You'll end up wearing them all, probably at the same time.
In north Gran Canaria, expect a mix of cloud and sunshine on Saturday and a fir bit of sunshine on Sunday.
The surf in north Gran Canaria will be small to medium all weekend and into next week. The southern breaks will be flat.
