Playa de El Puerto - La Aldea

A well hidden beach that you have to know to be able to find it. Easiest way to get there is to drive to the harbour of La Aldea. Park somewhere and look for a sign that shows you the way to the beach. if you look well at the map underneath in satellite view you can view the paths.

Some people think Gran Canaria is a spectacular destination with everything from the world's best beaches to jaw-dropping landscapes and a vibrant local culture and food scene. They are completely wrong and here are 25 reasons why you should never visit the island.

Everybody goes to Amadores beach and Playa del Inglés is busy every day. However, there are great sandy beaches in south Gran Canaria where you can sit on the sand surrounded by locals rather than tourists. Here are ten of the best.

While it is technically legal to be nude on any beach in Gran Canaria (and anywhere in Spain), about 20 of Gran Canaria's beaches are accepted nudist beaches. Here are ten top places to hang out in the nude.

The non-profit Blue Flag organisation only gives its prestigious award to the world's best beaches and marinas. Here's our photo guide to Gran Canaria's 15 Blue Flag beaches and two Blue Flag marinas. See our Ultimate Gran Canaria beach guide here.

With 82 beaches to choose from, Gran Canaria is a sunbathers paradise. For info on all of them, see this guide to Gran Canaria's beaches.

Beaches all over Gran Canaria won coveted Blue Flag awards this year. No beaches lost their Flag.

Gran Canaria's beaches are currently clear of fuel oil after a large volunteer-led clear up over the past two days. There is currently one confirmed oil slick 5 kilometres from the coast but no reports of fresh oil close to the island.

Go West: Playa de La Aldea

Split in two by a little headland, La Aldea is the west coast's only beach that's accessible by car.

While Puerto Rio and Playa del Inglés hardly existed before tourism, Arguineguín has always been a local town first and destination second. It's Las Marañuelas beach is the only easily-accessible one in south Gran Canaria with a real local feel.

Arguineguín's Scandinavian winter residents hang out La Lajilla beach and natural swimming pool and are quite happy that nobody else knows where it is.

Tip of the day

  • The Parafarmacia In Gran Canaria Is Not A Chemist!
The Parafarmacia In Gran Canaria Is Not A Chemist!

If there is one thing we hate it is visitors being tricked in Gran Canaria. In the past we've warned about overcharging at Gran Canaria chemists, and rip off electronics shops in resorts.

In this Tip Of The Day we return to the island's chemists or rather, to the island's fake chemists.

A chemist in Gran Canaria is called a Farmacia and always has a green cross sign. Farmacias are the only place tobuy medicine in Spain, even basics like paracetamol.

However, there is another kind of shop in Gran Canaria that looks and sounds like a chemist but doesn't sell medicine. This is the Parafarmacia and it also uses a green cross sign.

A parafarmacia is a herbal medicine shop that is not allowed to sell any normal medicine such as paracetamol, ibuprofen or antibiotics.

Instead, parafarmacias sell herbal alternatives to medicine but don't have to prove that they work and they can charge whatever they want.

We recently heard from a visitor to Gran Canaria who went into a parafarmacia and was charged 40 euros for a herbal alternative to Ibuprofen. It was only when they read the label that they realised what had happened.

To locate a genuine farmacia, see this website and search within your municipio (Puerto Rico is in Mogán, Playa del Inglés is in San Bartolomé de Tirajana). At weekends and on fiesta days many farmacias close but there is always one open, known as the farmacia de guardia, in each municipio.

Lex Says: To keep costs down, see this article for the way to ask for generic medicine rather than expensive branded alternatives.
